Why Origin doesn’t work, and what EA won’t be doing to fix it.

July 12, 2011 by

ORIGINMTsm

Regardless of what EA decides to tell the public about their Origin service, we all know that it’s out there to compete with one program. Steam. Steam, for those of you who have never touched a PC, allows gamers to purchase games and download them on the same service, allows a gamer to get achievements, chat in-game or out of game, launch all games on their computer compatible or not, and much more. It’s probably one of the most popular PC platforms that can be download, free of charge to the player.

To compete with this, EA has now come up with Origin. Origin is a service painfully similar to steam which allows you to download many of their newer and popular titles, chat with friends, and claims you can import contacts from Xbox Live or PSN. However when trying to find friends on Xbox Live the following, buggy notice pops up. “Sorry, we couldn’t find any of your friends that also user Origin.” Well there’s a reason for that. It’s because it’s crap.

Dust 514 Gets a Cover Charge

July 11, 2011 by

Dust 514

Back at E3, Sony and CCP showed off Dust 514 for the PS3 and explained how it connects with the PC’s EVE Online. Today, CCP’s CEO, Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, told how they will manage the launch of Dust 514 into this plan.

Pétursson explained that Dust 514 will have what he called a cover charge that is paid upfront in the beginning to play the game. It’s not money totally lost though because later you will receive credits as in-game currency.

“In the beginning you have to pre-buy credits, so you pay something like $10-$20 to enter the game and you get the equivalent number of credits in the game once you do that. We call this the ‘cover charge’.”

CCP’s CEO did state though that they might make Dust 514 fully free-to-play down the line but that the cover charge will be required for their launching of the game. There’s no word on how far off total free-to-play form is from the launch and charge though.

Keita Takahashi begins working with Tiny Speck Games.

July 11, 2011 by

katamariglitch

Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi left Namco Bandai last September due to his disappointment with the developer and the games industry as a whole.  Since then we haven’t heard much from Takahashi about any video game work until now.  In a recent blog post on the browser based MMO Glitch’s website, Tiny Speck games announced that Takahashi has joined forces with the social game developer to work on the project. Takahashi will also be moving from Japan to Vancouver to work with the team.

“A few months ago we were lucky enough to start talking to him. We played some Glitch together, batted ideas back and forth and found that we shared the same values — deep beliefs in curiosity, humor, absurdity, and above all a belief in the positive power of play.”

Its quite a surprise to see Takahashi return to the game industry seeing as how he has been quite vocal about pursuing other careers like designing playgrounds for children but I’m happy to see he has decided to stick around. Katamari is one of my favorite games from the PS2 era and if he can bring some of that magic to Glitch then I may be tempted to lift my no MMO policy to try it out.

New Dragon’s Dogma Screenshots Show Off Chimera

July 11, 2011 by

dogma2

Capcom Japan released a batch of new screenshots today, showing off one of the bigger monsters players will be fighting in their upcoming open world fantasy game Dragon’s Dogma. Lurking in dungeons at the beginning of the game, would-be adventurers will have to fight the Chimera, the creature from Greek mythology that’s part lion, part goat and has a snake for a tail. While it’s a lot bigger than your average human adventurer, it’s very quick and nimble, forcing the player to coordinate with his other party members to force it into a corner and take it down. The thing looks quite badass, so hit the jump and take a look for yourself.

July 11, 2011 by

theat

Square-Enix recently revealed a new Final Fantasy title they’re working on for the 3DS together with developer indieszero. It’s called Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy and will be a music game featuring music from all the numbered installments in the series up to XIII.

Yes, you read that right. And yes, it’s called Theatrhythm. You thought Dissidia: Duodecim was bad?

Each numbered entry in the Final Fantasy series basically comprises one episode of the game. After choosing a party, episode and difficulty level, players will go through three main stages, Field, Battle and Event, all the while interacting with the world using music-based gameplay. Defeating monsters will level up the characters, although no details on how that will work have been given as of yet. Players will also be able to unlock new music, movies and other things.

No release date has been given so far. Hit the jump to see the first two screenshots of the game in action.
