1up.com has recently reported on the surge of pirated copies being downloaded online. According to numbers from Big Champagne, a P2P research firm, “spore has been illegally downloaded via BitTorrent 171,402 times since September 1 — meaning downloads began a full week before the game was even released.”

Despite the uproar of protest from gamers on the DRM issue, EA has stood by their decision. “EA has not changed our basic DRM copy protection system. We simply changed the copy protection method from using the physical media, which requires authentication every time you play the game by requiring a disc in the drive, to one which uses a one-time online authentication.”

As tempted as I am to obtain an illegal copy myself, I can’t help but to see that Best Buy is 5 minutes from my office. I may not agree with EA’s DRM policy but the game is too innovative to short the creators. Plus the thought of paying money to make penis characters? How can can I pass that up?
