It looks like the upcoming installment in the long-running Tribes franchise (check here for our previous coverage) will be free-to-play. In order to make the game financially feasible, developer Hi-Rez is taking a hint from League of Legends and will make the players buy their loadouts. So if you want to play as a fast, nimble character, you’ll have to buy a loadout for that. Want to defend your flag with heavy weaponry? Buy a heavy loadout featuring heavy weaponry.

Hi-Rez plans to release new loadouts in regular intervals, mixing different equipment like armor, weapons, grenades, etc. , just like Riot does with Champions in League of Legends. To be honest, I’m not sure if this is such a good idea. Will the game be able to stay balanced when not everyone has access to the same loadouts? Will players actually want to own several different loadouts, or just buy the one that suits their playstyle? This announcement sure stirs up some questions, but I guess we’ll see how it all works out when Tribes: Ascend releases later this year.

Zen Studios has been doing a bang up job with Pinball FX 2. What started out as a pretty good pinball simulator is now one of the most active Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network games, thanks to a continuous stream of excellent DLC. Marvel Pinball continues on, this time through the trenches of WW2 with good ol’ Cappy America.

Marvel Pinball Captain America (Xbox 360 [reviewed], PlayStation 3)
Developer: Zen Studios
Publisher: Zen Studios
Released: June 28 / 29, 2011
MSRP: $2.99 (PlayStation Network), 240 MSP (Xbox Live Arcade)

There’s no need to be a comic nerd to get into this table, although it might help you to be good at pinball. Like past Marvel Pinball tables, this is a complex series of missions and quests to complete disguised as a pinball table. You get to tackle two of Captain America’s worst enemies, Baron Zemo and Red Skull, as well as hook up with his buddies, the Howling Commandos and of course, Bucky, his trusty kid companion.

Missions are accessed in a variety of ways. The main entrance to Baron Zemo’s castle is one of them. It opens up after you score a few skill shots and gaining entry into his dinky pad lets you do one of three quests that vary from trading punches with that Skull freak or even face the DEATH RAY, courtesy of the Baron himself. Tackling these missions is a lot of fun, even though you don’t really have direct control over Captain America as he dukes it out with a villain or try to close off a leak. This is pinball, after all, so everything is based on making good shots at just the right time. Pinball FX2 is a difficult and extremely rewarding game, Captain America being no exception.

This is a beautifully crafted table. If you’re into Marvel, you’ll go nuts with all the detail thrown in by Zen Studios at just about every corner. Baron Zemo is always walking around the bottom of the table taunting Cappy and when the gloves are dropped and he gets to fisticuffs with the Red Skull, you get to see the fight going on. Granted, these can get extremely distracting, considering this is a pinball game and it’s hard enough to pay attention to the little ball bouncing all over. The presentation sometimes can get too busy, especially at later stages of missions when all the lights on the table go on at once.

This is the perfect time to get into Captain America. With the movie coming out soon and the revival of the character in Marvel’s comic book, you’re bound to run into the guy even on the subway, on your way home from work. You won’t find this piece of content floating around in a hunk of ice. Marvel Pinball Captain America is a blast and easily worth the price of admission. Avengers, assemble!

Score: 8.5 / 10

Microsoft’s Larry Hrub, a.k.a Major Nelson has just revealed the official list of games that will be released during the Summer of Arcade promotion set to start next month on Xbox Live Arcade.

July 20th will be the day we’ll all be able to jump into the colorful world of Bastion, for 1200 MSP. If you’re into the good kind of dust, you know, the one where silicon comes from, you’ll be able to go with From Dust on July 27th. August opens up with the aptly named Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, for 1200 MSP on the 3rd, followed by Fruit Ninja Kinect on August 10th, in which you massacre helpless fruits while flailing your arms like an insane person, all for 800 MSP. Closing the promotion, Toy Soldiers: Cold War will relive your childhood Rambo fantasies without the need of any steroids on August 17th, for 1200 MSP.

And if you buy all five games, you’ll get Crimson Alliance along with three downloadable characters, for free. Unless you’re like me and live in one of the three countries that Microsoft expressively excludes from the promotion – Brazil, South Africa or Japan. In that case, you get nada. Nani-mo. Fokol.

Indie developer SuperGiantGames has just announced over their Twitter account (@SupergiantGames) that Bastion will be released on Xbox Live Arcade on July 20th, for 1200 MSP. It will be the first title in this year’s Summer of Arcade promotion, along with From Dust and Toy Soldiers: Cold War, to name a few of my most eagerly awaited games in that program.

SuperGiantGames has garnered quite a reputation after securing a publishing deal with Warner Bros Interactive shortly before this year’s E3. Bastion had a small booth at the show but attracted a lot of attention regardless, with its mix of Diablo gameplay with a beautiful and colorful pastel painting.

The developer was formed early last year by ex EALA devs Amir Rao, Gavin Simon and Darren Korb, who were later joined by former 2K producer Greg Kasavin, programmer Andrew Wang, artist Jenn Zee and Logan Cunningham, who provides the voice for Bastion’s storyteller and narrator.

French gaming magazine NoFrag recently had a chance to sit down with Todd Harris, director of Hi-Rez Studios, and ask him a couple questions about their upcoming game Tribes: Ascend.

Originally developed by Dynamix, Hi-Rez Studios aquired the rights to the Tribes franchise in October 2010 and have since then been working on the next two installments, the second being being an MMO called Tribes: Universe. Hit the jump for a summary.

The game currently supports 32 players, the team continues to experiment with less and more

Projectiles will depend on your character’s velocity, meaning if you fire a rocket while going 80Km/h, it will inherit that speed

Tribes: Ascend is a pure multiplayer game, just like Tribes 1 & 2

The beta will contain two modes: Capture the Flag (with bases and generators) and Rabbit Chase

The first ingame videos will probably be shown at the end of June

There is no speed limit to skiing, it will depend on the player’s skill

The game will contain most of the iconic Tribes weapons and packs, as well as some new ones

The team respects and listens to the existing Tribes community, but won’t listen to them blindly. Their goal is to reintroduce the franchise and to reunite the 1 Million+ players all over the world, by keeping the basic elements but modernizing the game where it’s necessary

They’re not sure why Tribes: Vengeance didn’t sell too well, but think it has to do with it being released near Doom3, Half Life 2 and Halo 2. They will keep supporting and improving the game after release and hope for good word-of-mouth

The main platform for Tribes: Ascend will be the PC, as that’s where the franchise was born

They will implement ways to coordinate and communicate during the beta, and will add clan support later on

They will start the beta with 4 maps and use them to balance the game. Afterwards, they will release more

An SDK will not be made available at launch, but may follow at a later date

The game will offer the classic three armor classes, but there will be many options to customize your load-out and appearance

There’s no doubt that PopCap sells their games like gold and not the least of which are the Bejeweled games. As simple as they are, they can also be very addicting to both casual and core gamers. Well, PopCap has announced that they are bringing Bejeweled 3 to top consoles in five versions according to the press release.

It was first released back in December and is already out for PC and Mac, but the third game will arrive simultaneously on Xbox 360, Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation 3, Playstation Network, and the Nintendo DS some time later this year in the fourth quarter across North America and Europe.

“Critics agree that Bejeweled 3 raised the standard for match-3 games to new heights,” said Ed Allard, studio head at PopCap games. “This holiday, we’re bringing that experience to Playstation 3, PSN, Xbox 360, Xbox Live, and Nintendo DS gamers with adaptations that look great and play even better on each platform.”
